It wasn't the most aesthetic event to watch, but the Delta High School girls basketball team got off to a successful start to the 2013-14 season with a 47-19 win in Cortez on Dec. 2.
Delta, playing without head coach Matt Hamm whose father passed away the weekend prior to the game, could not find the range in the first quarter of play and scored just four points (baskets by senior Shelby Curtis and junior Desiree Smith) against Cortez in the first eight minutes.
Cortez fared no better as they, too, posted just four points in the opening quarter for a 4-4 score going to the second stanza.
Delta had greater success in the second quarter as it outscored Cortez 17-8 to take a 21-12 halftime lead. Curtis had a pair of field goals and made two free throws to pace the Lady Panthers with six points in the period. Smith hit a two-point field goal and knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer for five of her game-high 15 points. Katie Puderbaugh scored three points from the free-throw line on three-of-four shooting.
In the third quarter, Delta outscored its host by a 14-3 advantage, with Smith hitting four shots for eight points to lead the way. Puderbaugh, who finished with 13 points, scored four points in the quarter.
Puderbaugh had six points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Panthers to a 12-4 edge and a final score of 47-19.
Delta was 18 of 55 from the floor in its opener for an average of 33 percent.
Too many missed shots from close range and turnovers limited Delta's offense.
Rebounding wasn't an issue for Delta as it pulled down 18 offensive boards and grabbed 20 defensive caroms. Curtis topped the list in rebounding with nine (three offensive and six defensive) while Puderbaugh was good for four offensive and three defensive rebounds.
The Lady Panthers' steals leaders were Curtis and Puderbaugh with five and four respectively.
Delta will take part in the Fruita Wildcat Tournament starting on Thursday, Dec 12. The Lady Panthers open play with Carbon (Price, Utah) at 3:30 p.m. Delta's second game of the tournament is with Air Academy (Air Force Academy) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Its final game is set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Central.blog comments powered by Disqus
