Delta High School's wrestling team was successful in defeating the visiting Montrose Indians for only the second time in 11 years on Dec. 5. The Panthers started slow but found a way to hold off the surging Indians for a 36-33 win.
Competition began at 120 pounds where Montrose's Emmanuel Sandoval claimed a 6-4 decision.
David Brown started the scoring for Delta with a 15-1 major decision over Nick Sulham in the 126-pound class. The win put the Panthers ahead, 4-3.
Daryun Urquhart defeated Montrose's Matt Sandoval with a second-period pin at 138.
Delta came up short in the next two matches with losses for Kodie Komives against Austin Delgado (145) by decision and Henry Komives at 152 to Ethan Davis by way of a fall at 2:54.
The Panthers won the next four matches, beginning with Derek Horn at 160 in a technical fall (15-0) over Travis McGregor.Daniel Brown decisioned Montrose's Maurico Zuniga, 5-2, in the 170-pound match and Cordell Stroud won the 182-pound match with a fall over Fernando Masquede at the 3:13 point in the match. Alejandro Medina won by disqualification at 195.
Livan Santander (220) lost a tough match to Montrose's Davis Power by way of a pin at the 5:18 mark.
Marcus Garcia got the best of Montrose's Allen Tieme in the 285-pound weight class with a pin at 1:29.
A win by Montrose's Terrell Banuelos over 103-pounder Luke Anderson brought the team score to 36-30 with one match left.
Delta 113-pound wrestler Kavan Trujillo was leading 6-2 after one period and looked to be able to wrestle with the Indians' Ricky Padilla. Padilla outscored Trujillo 7-2 in the second period to move ahead 9-8 going to the third and deciding period. Padilla added three more points to his score on a near fall but couldn't get the pin as Trujillo held on to force a 12-8 win for Padilla and salvage the 36-33 win.blog comments powered by Disqus
