Delta High School's wrestling team participated in the Uintah, Utah, Tournament of Champions this past weekend. This was the 41st year for this tournament.
This tournament is one of the largest tournaments in the state, outside of the state tournament. Fifty-five teams were listed on this year's entry list.
Last year Delta placed 10th with 97 points. David Brown placed third at 113, Kory Mills was fifth at 170 and Marcus Garcia placed sixth.
Delta was solid in placing four wrestlers in this year's tournament. Brown finished with a 4-3 record and placed sixth. Mills was 5-2 and placed fifth and Cordell Stroud was fifth with his 4-2 record.
Garcia duplicated last year's placement (6th) with a 3-3 record.
The Panthers placed 10th in a field of 55 teams. According to Delta head wrestling coach Clayton Curtis, "Overall we had a pretty good weekend. We came out in the first two rounds guns blazing! We jumped out early and were leading the tournament during the first two rounds but had a few tough losses during the quarterfinals. We ended up finishing well and had several guys wrestle very well, including our JV guys who went with us. Kory Mills wrestled tough! I felt like he is turning the corner and becoming comfortable in any position."
Delta also competed in the Rifle Triangular on Jan. 9.
The Panthers continued their winning ways last Thursday in Rifle while competing in a triangular against the Bears and Eagle Valley.
Delta scored an easy win in each of the two duals winning 51-20 against Eagle Valley and 52-16 over Rifle.
Winning matches against Eagle Valley were Hayes McCracken (120), David Brown (126), Tylon Cordova (132), Daryan Urquhart (138), Daniel Brown (160), Kory Mills (170), Alejandro Medina (220) and Marcus Garcia (285).
Against Rifle, many of the same athletes came away with wins for Delta. On that list for the Panthers were McCracken, David Brown, Cordova, Derek Horn (152), Daniel Brown, Mills, Cordell Stroud (182), Garcia and Luke Anderson (106).
The Panthers will be on the road again this weekend as they travel to Alamosa for the Alamosa Duals. Delta will be in competition on both Friday and Saturday.
On Jan. 23, the Panthers are hosting Moffat County at 6 and 7 p.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
