It went pretty much as expected last Thursday in Glenwood Springs with Delta's Panthers rolling to a 58-16 win on the mat. There were seven falls recorded for Delta along with one major decision and a pair of forfeits that combined to produce the 4A WSL victory.
Matches began at 152 where Delta's Derek Horn outscored Lance Brevig 11-2 for a major decision and a 4-0 start for the Panthers.
At 160, Daniel Brown trailed 2-0 early to Glenwood's Justin Barham after a takedown. Brown got a reversal to tie the match at 2-2 heading into the second period. Two points for Barham in the second period would make the final score 4-2 as neither wrestler scored the rest of the way.
Edgar Carbajal got the jump on Kory Mills at 170 with an early take down. Mills tied the bout with two escapes going to the second period. Mills added points to his score on a takedown and a near fall before pinning Carbajal at the 2:47 mark.
Cordell Stroud picked up six points in a forfeit win at 182 as did Livan Santander at 195.
The first period was scoreless between Glenwood's Irvin Vazquez and Alejandro Medina in the 220 pound bout. Medina got a takedown and a near fall for four points in the second period to lead 4-0 heading to the final period. Medina scored an escape and a takedown before putting Vazquez on his back for the pin at 5:57.
Marcus Garcia (31-7) took the early lead in this match with a takedown and then scored a pin over Mitch Brown of Glenwood at 1:57.
The 106-pound match between Delta's Luke Anderson and the Demons' Miguel Mendoza was all Delta. Anderson built a 7-1 lead entering the third period. A takedown and a near fall built a 12-1 lead before Anderson pinned Mendoza at 4:50.
Kavan Trujillo trailed Glenwood's Miguel Peralta 6-3 after one period. Trujillo outscored Peralta 7-4 in the second period to tie the match at 10-10. In the final period, Trujillo had a reversal and a near fall before ending the match with a pin at 2:25.
At 120, Wyatt Church wrestled for Hayes McCracken and suffered a loss by fall to Glenwood's Larry Flores at 4:26. The match was tied at 6-6 after one period and Flores had built a 10-6 lead going to the third.
The 126-pound match between David Brown and Glenwood's Alex Rachesky ended with Brown earning a pin at 4:32. Brown was leading 12-1 prior to his fall over Rachesky in the third period.
Tylon Cordova was in control from the start in his 132-pound match with Glenwood's Agustin Hernandez. Cordova was leading 12-0 before pinning Hernandez at 2:33 of the second period.
Daryan Urquhart lost a 19-1 major decision to the Demons' Myles Wilson in the 145-pound division.
The evening's final match featured Delta's Shaun Staats and Glenwood's Joel Ordonez at 145. Staats trailed 7-4 after one period and 11-6 after two. Ordonez finished the match with a 4-3 edge in the third period for the 15-9 decision to make the final score 58-16 in favor of the Panthers.
Delta High School has a number of wrestlers who are listed in this week's top challengers in Region 4. Those athletes include Jayden Chynoweth at 113 (13th, 8-7); David Brown at 126 (9th, 29-9); Derek Horn at 152 (10th, 25-11); Kory Mills at 170 (12th, 22-10); Cordell Stroud at 182 (12th, 23-12); and Marcus Garcia at 285 (7th, 31-7).
Delta will host Hotchkiss on Feb. 5 with matches set for 6 and 7 p.m.
On Thursday (Feb. 6) the Panthers are in Gunnison for a 5 p.m. match on the campus of WSCU.
