Mykayla Music, Clarissa Whiting, Skylyn Webb and Cleo Whiting ran a 9:56.46 to eclipse the old record of 10:13.46 set by Delta High School in 2012.The wind didn't begin to reach high enough velocity until well into the afternoon at last Saturday's Cedaredge Invitational Track Meet. For the most part, the wind was of little significance with seven new meet records being established.

There were five new standards set in the women's division and two in the men's.

Delta's girls scored 74 points and placed third behind Eagle Valley (118) and Paonia (100.5). Hotchkiss was fourth (68) and Cedaredge sixth (51).

Lady Panthers

Delta's athletes figured in three of those new marks with two coming in the women's division and one in the men's.

Delta's 3200m relay team set a new girls' mark for that race with a time of 9:56.46. The old mark (10:13.46) was established by Delta in 2012 with Clarissa and Cleo Whiting teaming with Kyla Ownbey and MaKenna Broyles combining talents to set that record. This year's new record was set by Clarissa Whiting, Skylyn Webb, Mykayla Music, and Cleo Whiting. All but Music, a freshman, are seniors.

The second new meet record for Delta's girls involved the Whiting sisters. Clarissa led for seven of the eight laps in the 3200m run with Cleo outrunning Clarissa for the win in a time of 11:37.35. Clarissa also broke the old record with her time of 11:37.56 to place second. Basalt's Chiara Del Piccolo held the old record of 11:37.88 that was set back in 2009.

Telluride's Rachel Hampton was not up to her mid-season form after competing in state competition in skiing. Her time of 11:57.51 was good for third place.

With her contribution in the 3200m relay, Webb had a hand in three first- place finishes. She won the 100m in 13.12 and the 200m in 26.51.

Patti Chapman joined Clarissa Whiting's runner-up placing with a second-place finish in the triple jump after jumping 33-9.5, a personal best for her.

Bry Music, who usually is close to the top spot in both the shot put and discus, had an off day that resulted in a fourth place in the shot and a third in the discus.

Erin Zunich finished seventh in the 100m dash and was a member of the seventh-place 800m sprint medley relay team. Other members of the relay team included Chapman, Nia Prescott and Adara Sandoval.

An eighth-place finish in the long jump from Chapman concluded the scoring for the Lady Panthers.

Panther Boys

Delta's boys accumulated 66 points to finish fourth at the Cedaredge Invitational. Eagle Valley won the team title with 156.5 points and Cedaredge was third with 97.5 points. Hotchkiss was sixth (55) and Paonia seventh with 30 points.

Chris Black skimmed the 300m hurdles in record time to defeat Dante Markley for the second time this season in that race. Black posted a time of 40.88 to eclipse Bradey Gasaway's time of 40.97 that set the standard for the 300m hurdles in 2009. Gasaway ran for Coal Ridge.

Black was entered in the event as a new jumper with no distance entered for flight assignment. His 40-plus effort established him as one of the top triple jumpers in the 4A WSL. He did not jump in the finals as he was involved in high jumping immediately following his record-setting performance in the 300m hurdles.

Black admitted he was a little used up following his hurdles victory and just didn't have the energy to compete in the triple jump finals. His hope that his preliminary jump would hold up for a high place came through. Only Paonia's Ben Linnell had a longer jump at 40-6.25.

The drain of running the hurdles, and not enough time to recoup ample energy, left Black short in his attempt to stay with Cedaredge's Reid Gates in the high jump. Gates soared 6-6 to win the event and Black placed seventh after clearing 5-10.

Third-place finishes went to 1600m runner Dustin Ownbey and the 1600m relay team of Jacob Millard, Robert Williams, Douglas Hawkins and Zach Decker.

Decker and Ownbey also placed fourth in the 400m dash and 3200m run respectively. Eian Baier jumped 19-5 to finish fourth in the long jump as well.

Delta had a trio of sixth-place finishers, including, Luis Pina (800m run), Hawkins (long jump), and Dylan Brattain (discus).

Individual seventh-place winners included Jonathon Kinderknecht (3200m run) and Kyle Collins (discus).

The 400m relay team (Black, Williams, Johnny Ponce, Bodie Giron) and the 3200m relay team (Decker, Kinderknecht, Jacob Davignon, Ownbey) also finished fourth in the day-long track meet.

An eighth-place finish went to Brattain in the shot put.

Delta's track squads are entered in this weekend's Frank Woodburn Invitational at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. Events begin at 9 a.m.
