The Paonia girls' track team won four events and placed second in another three to win the Frank Woodburn Invitational Saturday with 109 points. Fruita Monument placed second with 92 points.
Sophomore Morgan Hartigan won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 2.25 inches. Hartigan's throw broke the meet record and re-set the Paonia High School record of 37-3.5, set in 2003 by Stacey Poulos.
Ashley Van Vleet claimed the team's only other individual event win. Van Vleet topped a field of 32 to win the 400m in 61.19; teammate Lindsay Russell placed second in 61.40, and Taylor Plymale finished sixth (65.51).
Taylor Polson, Chelsy Reed, Russell and Van Vleet won the 1600m relay in 4:09.12. Van Vleet ran the anchor leg in that race, and also anchored the 800m medley team along with Marisa Edmondson, Brooklynd Erickson and Easton Hartigan to a second-place finish in 1:54.49.
Hartigan, Edmondson, Erickson and Reed placed second in the 800-meter relay (1:50.46). The 400-meter team of Edmondson, Morgan and Easton Hartigan and Erickson also placed second with a time of 51.58, but fell shy of the school record of 51.36, set in 2006.
Taylor Polson ran the 800m in 2:32.14 to place fourth. Russell placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 27.92.
In the 3200m run, Deon Jensen placed fourth with a time of 12:51.2, and Chelsea Meilner placed sixth.
Ce'rra Carsten placed fifth in the high jump and third in the triple jump; Easton Hartigan was sixth in the triple jump. Erickson finished eighth in the long jump. Taylor Carsten threw the discus 104 feet, 2 inches to place sixth.
Paonia boys place in 7 events at Woodburn
On Saturday, junior thrower Tony Darling returned to the shot put ring for the first time this season, placing fourth with a throw of 43 feet, 8 inches at Saturday's Frank Woodburn Invitational. Darling's throw topped all other 2A competitors at the meet, and placed Darling in the top five in state 2A competition.
Paonia earned 21 points to place 10th in team standings.
Jason Sturgis placed fourth in the 3200-meter run. He was edged out of earning a point to finish ninth in the 1600m run.
The 3200m relay team of Jeramiah Hillman, Jesse Reed, Josiah Spano and Sturgis finished seventh; the 800m relay team of William Austin, Spano, Taylor Walters and Reed finished sixth. In the 1600m relay, Austin, Hillman, Reed and Spano finished seventh.
In a highly competitive race, Austin finished sixth in the 300m hurdles. He finished first among Class 2A racers. His time of 43.91 is currently the second-fastest recorded in state 2A competition.blog comments powered by Disqus
