Senior receiver Chris Allen was among several Bulldogs to have a great game in Hotchkiss's 34-33 overtime win Friday against Monte Vista.
"He had an ankle injury in practice and he didn't think he'd be 100 percent," said head coach Zac Lemon following the win.
"But he really showed a lot of guts tonight, made some big plays. And of course, the biggest one of them all there at the end."
That play, a 10-yard touchdown pass, came on the second play of overtime. The game was tied at 27-27 with less than a minute remaining when Monte Vista blocked a Bulldog field goal.
The OT play went just as it was supposed to, said Allen, who was closely covered in the end zone. "As soon as (the ball) was up in the air, it was all focus on the ball," said Allen. "Devan (Rupe) put it where it was supposed to be and I just came down with it."
Freshman place kicker Ryan Hafley, who was 4-4 in PATs for the night, kicked his final extra point to put Hotchkiss ahead, 34-27.
Hotchkiss defensive back Duncan Turnbull stopped Monte Vista's first overtime attempt at a touchdown. On their second play, QB Michael Sanchez connected with senior running back Mitch Vanderpool in the left corner, but the Pirates' PAT was wide.
Rupe completed 12 of 22 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 107 yards, including a 64-yard scoring run midway into the first period. He "played really well, played smart and made good decisions," said Lemon. The game was the team's best effort this season, "And we like to see that in the most competitive games."
Alex Smith led the Bulldogs in rushing with 167 yards and one touchdown in 29 carries. Smith's TD came late in the second period to give Hotchkiss a 13-7 lead.
The Pirates opened second-quarter scoring on a pass play from inside the 10 yard line. The Pirates' PAT was wide left, but officials incorrectly called the play dead, rather than call for a do-over, and the game was tied at 13-13.
Thirteen seconds later, Rupe connected with Smith on a 60-yard touchdown play, and Hafley's kick gave them a 20-13 lead.
Monte Vista shot back with a 53-yard drive, ending on a two-yard touchdown run by Jacob Vance. The PAT tied the game at 20-20 with 6:02 remaining in the half.
With 2:45 remaining in the half, Rupe connected with Ross LeValley on a 17-yard TD play, and Hafley's kick gave Hotchkiss a 27-20 lead going into the half.
"It was definitely our team's best game," said Allen, who ended the night with seven receptions for 77 yards and two solo tackles. Senior Caleb Schelle ended the night with 10 solo tackles and five assists. "We still have lots to work on, but it was really fun. We came out with a win, and that's our goal every week."
Hotchkiss opens league play this week at Cedaredge. The Bruins had a bye last week, and defeated Dolores, 42-0, on Sept. 13. "To have a big emotional win and then bounce right back (and face Cedaredge) could be pretty challenging," said Lemon, "but I know our boys are up to it."blog comments powered by Disqus
