This year's race for the 2A Region 4 cross country title and qualification for the 2013 state meet should be close between Telluride, Crested Butte Community School and Hotchkiss. Ranked one, two and three respectively heading into this Friday's meet, they each have one top-ranked runner in the state — Andrew Tiedeman of Hotchkiss, Forrest Smith of CBCS and No. 1-ranked Jack Plantz of Telluride.
Friday's race will be the first time Tiedeman and Plantz have competed against each other this season.
Tyrell Clock, who has placed consistently in the top 15 this season, could see a top five finish for Hotchkiss on Friday. Bryce Homme, Zack Allen, Will Drbohlav and Andrew Oviedo will also represent the Bulldogs for a chance to run at the 71st annual state cross country championships on Oct. 26 at Colorado Springs.
On the girls' side, last year, the Hotchkiss duo of Natalie Anderson and Jennifer Celis finished third and fourth at regionals, leading their team to a regional championship, and a week later, to the school's first state cross country championship.
With six runners ranked in the top 10, the path looks clear for a repeat this week. This is the last race at Delta for Anderson and Celis, both seniors and both top runners in the state. This year, Anderson and Celis are ranked 1 and 2 respectively heading into the regionals. A total of six Hotchkiss runners, including Mae Anderson, Sophia Schelle, Katy Parsons and Tiffany Clock are ranked in the top 10 in the region.
The top 15 runners and top three scoring teams (top five runners from each team) qualify for state.
Races are run at Confluence Park in Delta. The 2A girls' race is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., immediately following the 2A boys' race at 12:30 p.m. Class 3A and 4A races will follow on a rolling schedule.blog comments powered by Disqus
