The Hotchkiss Bulldogs wrestling team placed five wrestlers and scored 91 points to finish seventh at the annual Rob Mickel Tournament, held Jan. 18 at Salida High School.
The Bulldogs sent two wrestlers into the championship matches, with Jake Hubbell, the No. 2 seed at 106 pounds, defeating Colton Hall for the title.
Hall, one of several unattached wrestlers competing at the tournament, upset No. 1-seeded Brett Fuller, a sophomore and returning state qualifier from Del Norte, to advance to the finals.
Garrett Toothaker opened with pins over Manitou Springs and Palisade. Toothaker (16-4), a 113-pound senior and returning state qualifier, was seeded second and faced No. 1-seed Talon Harris (15-1) of Norwood in the finals. Toothaker was runner up after falling to Harris in 1:03.
Colton DeLuzio was 2-2 and wrestled back after a second-round loss to place sixth.
At 145 pounds, freshman Wade Katzdorn defeated Ty Morton of Cedaredge to advance to the championship match against Iaasic Pena (12-1), an unranked junior from Ignacio who had upset No. 1-seeded Jeremiah Moreno in the semifinals. Katzdorn was runner-up after losing by pinfall to Pena.
At 160, freshman Parker Katzdorn was eliminated by Isaiah Surber of Cedaredge (7-8) in consolation.
After a first-round bye, 220 Tristen Todd ended the tournament at 2-1. Todd lost by pinfall to No. 1-seeded Luis Mariscal (21-3) of Center in quarterfinals and was eliminated by Garrett Humble of Cedaredge.
Freshman heavyweight Conner Collins (11-9) lost in the opening round to No. 1-seeded Miles Keane of St. Mary's and battled back to fifth place with a pin (3:00) over unattached freshman Joe Nault.
On Friday the Bulldogs dualed to a 40-30 win over Peyton. Hubbell (106), Toothaker (113) and Wade Katzdorn (145) all won their matches by pinfall.
The Bulldogs are 5-4 and will dual Moffat County (7-4) this Thursday at 5 p.m., at Delta High School. Hotchkiss will dual the Pirates in Olathe (4-7) on Friday.
