On his final attempt of the night at a PAT, freshman place-kicker Ryan Hafley scooped up a high snap and carried the ball through the swarm of Del Norte jerseys, cut left, and ran across the goal line for the 2-point conversion.
The play came early in the third quarter, and capped a Friday night of big plays for the Bulldogs, who trounced visiting Del Norte, 43-0.
It all began when Del Norte fumbled on its opening drive and Jaden Simpson recovered the ball on the Tiger 21. The Bulldogs had a two-play drive, with senior Hank Edwards taking a short pass from quarterback Devan Rupe for 14 yards in for the score.
On their next drive, a 45-yard pass play from Rupe to Chris Allen put the ball on the Tiger 8, and Alex Smith followed Duncan Turnbull in for the score. The 2-point conversion by Edwards gave Hotchkiss a 14-0 lead with 7:18 remaining in the first period.
Rupe scored from inside the six to put Hotchkiss ahead by 20 with 2:33 remaining. Smith ran for a second TD, and Hafley's kick put the score at 27-0.
Smith scored the only second-period points on a 1-yard carry. Hotchkiss led 35-0 at halftime.
The Bulldog defense held Del Norte (0-3, 0-0, 1A Southern Peaks Conference) to 58 yards rushing and 175 yards total.
Smith finished the night with133 yards and three TDs, and Turnbull had 13 carries for 90 yards.
Wade Katzdorn and Cameron Matus each contributed a sack.
Hotchkiss is now 2-1 overall. It hosts Monte Vista (3-0, 0-0, 1A SPC) this Friday at 7 p.m. Monte Vista is coming off of a 41-0 win over Roaring Fork.
