The Paonia Eagles will wrestle their final dual of the season Thursday night when they host Class 5A Grand Junction, ranked ninth in state 5A competition and the only Western Slope team ranked in the top 10.
The Tigers list wrestlers in the top four in state rankings, including Tyler Zook (220), Isaac Rider (138) and Louis Guillen (145). At 160, No. 1-ranked Eagle Zach Milner (26-3) could face No. 1-ranked defending state champion Jacob Trujillo.
The Tigers are one of five top Class 4A and 5A teams scheduled to dual at Paonia this season. The Eagles lost to Arvada West, currently the No. 1-ranked 5A team, 30-33 in December, and defeated Pueblo West in January. Discovery Canyon (4A, No. 5) and Broomfield (4A, No. 1) were also on the schedule but both teams canceled.
Due to last week's heavy snowfall across the region, Paonia was unable to make the duals with Rocky Ford and Swink scheduled for last Friday night at Center High School. They also missed the Feb. 1 Center Invitational.
The Eagles are currently 13-1 in duals and remain ranked first in Class 2A On the Mat team rankings, with regional competition opening Feb. 14 at Grand Junction High School. Thirteen teams will compete at the tournament, with the top four in each weight class qualifying for the state tournament.blog comments powered by Disqus
