With just under three weeks remaining before district playoffs, the Lady Eagles (12-3 overall, 4-0 2A/1A Western Slope League) edged up to ninth place in state Class 2A Colorado Preps rankings.
Paonia's losses include a season-opening, five-point loss to Class 3A schools Olathe — ranked second in the 3A WSL, and ninth-ranked St. Mary's (10-4, 8-2 3A Tri-Peak League) at the Holy Family tournament in December.
Its only loss to a 2A team was in January's one-point squeaker to Meeker, which came down to the final moments of the game.
The Lady Cowboys' 12-1, 4-0 record puts them in first place in the WSL and in eighth place in Colorado Preps rankings, one spot ahead of Paonia. The two teams will play for the league record at Meeker on Feb. 15.
Paonia travels to Plateau Valley this Friday. Saturday's game against De Beque will not be held, since the Dragons were unable to field a team. The boys game begins at 4 p.m. The Lady Eagles' league game against Vail Christian (0-2, 5-5), which was canceled due to last Friday's heavy snowfall, is rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The Paonia boys, with two weeks and some of the toughest teams in the league ahead on the schedule between now and district playoffs, are 9-4 overall, 4-0 in the 2A/1A Western Slope League, and are in third place in the league and two games ahead of Meeker heading into the final two weeks of the regular schedule.
The Eagles are riding a seven-game winning streak and haven't dropped a game since their two-point loss to Hotchkiss in December. Last week they crept up a couple of notches in state Colorado Preps rankings to eighth place and one place ahead of the only other top-10 Western Slope league team, Meeker.
Last week's snow storm resulted in the cancellation of Friday's game at Vail Christian, ranked first in the WSL at 10-2, 2-0. The game is rescheduled for next Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The Eagles will play at Plateau Valley (2-9, 1-5) this Friday and host De Beque (3-10, 0-4) Saturday at 5:30 p.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
