With the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 Center duals and tournament canceled due to heavy snowfall, the Paonia Eagles were hoping to finish the season at home against Class 5A Grand Junction before preparing for this week's regional tournament. But after the Tigers canceled last Thursday's duals, head coach Andy Pipher was scrambling to get his kids on the mat.
"Going 11, 12 days without competition, it's hard on these boys," said Pipher while riding the team bus to Norwood Friday morning, a day ahead of the Norwood Invitational and another forecasted snowstorm in the San Juan region. "They need some competition. They're tearing each other's heads off in the room."
Pipher was planning a scrimmage at Norwood Friday night, and expected good competition at the tournament.
On Saturday, the Eagles scored 209 points and claimed seven championships to win the Norwood Invitational. They also brought home two Outstanding Wrestler trophies.
Josh Altman (120, 28-4) was voted tournament Outstanding Wrestler, Lower Weights. Altman (113) won by a 4-1 decision over Austin Todd of Cedaredge to advance to the semis. In the championship round Altman won by a 7-4 decision over junior Talon Harris of Norwood, a previously undefeated wrestler ranked No. 1 by On the Mat.
At 152 pounds, Ty Coats was voted Outstanding Wrestler, Upper Weights. Coats (29-2) defeated 22-4 sophomore Tim Armintrout of Norwood, 6-1, for the win.
Also claiming championships were Jesse Reed (126, 33-0), Bo Pipher (132, 30-2), who won by injury default over Dalton Hannigan of Palisade; Zach Milner (29-3), who pinned Danny Harris of Norwood for the championship; and Logan Schopp at 170 with a win by pinfall (3:00) over Kolby Starks of Norwood.
In the only round robin of the day, Will Austin (23-7) finished 3-0 at 182 pounds for the championship.
At 138 pounds, Isaac Ferguson was runner-up, defeating wrestlers from Cedaredge and Palisade before falling to No. 1-seed Peter Williamson of Cedaredge (31-5) in the championship round. At 220, Joel Simianer (21-12) fell to Blade Harrigan of Norwood in the championship round to finish second.
Nick Brewer (145) was 2-1 for the day to place fourth.
Paonia's No. 1-ranked heavyweight, Tony Darling (26-2) was out for the day for college entrance testing.
Norwood, ranked sixth in state On the Mat rankings, finished second with 184 points.
