The Paonia boys basketball team will enter next week's 2A District 5 tournament in second place in the Western Slope League after a 61-52 loss Saturday at Meeker. The Cowboys clinched the league title with the win and will enter next week's district competition with a 9-0 record.
"It was one of those nights when things just weren't clicking for us, and they were for them," said head coach Chase Roeber, whose Eagles ended the week with an 8-1 league record. Cowboys senior Jeremy Musgrave, who scored 37 points for the Cowboys, was "unreal," said Roeber. "I felt we defended fairly well against him. He just didn't miss."
At home last Friday, Paonia dominated No. 3 Rangely (7-2) in a 52-44 conference win. The Eagles finished regular-season competition against Hotchkiss Tuesday night (see game details in the Feb. 26 issue of the DCI). They host a pigtail game against Hayden (2-7) on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
