The Lady Eagles will end the regular season in second place in 2A/1A Western Slope League basketball standings following Saturday's 59-45 conference loss to the Lady Cowboys at Meeker.
The Cowboys have been coming out fast on every team, said head coach Scott Rienks, and Saturday's game was no exception.
"Meeker came out on fire," sinking four or five threes in the first quarter to take a 24-10 lead, said Rienks, and Paonia was unable to recover. "We came out flat on defense. It was one of those nights where nothing was going our way."
Paonia got within seven points with four minutes remaining in the game, but was dogged by turnovers.
The Eagles will host a pigtail game next Tuesday night, but with regular-season games still on the schedule, they won't know whether they will face ninth-place Hayden (1-6) or eighth-place Rangely (2-6) until the last scores are in, including yesterday's season finale against Hotchkiss.
Their first tournament game just might come down to playing Hotchkiss, which is in third place at 7-1.
Nothing personal, but they'd rather play a team that doesn't live nine miles away, said Rienks, "But we didn't take care of business."blog comments powered by Disqus
