Paonia welcomed Hotchkiss to the 2A Western Slope League Saturday, sweeping the doubleheader at Paonia and blanking the Bulldogs in game one with a 9-0 win.
With the exception of 2010, when they didn't play each other, the Bulldogs have won every game against Paonia since 2008.
This is the first year in recent history that the two teams have played in the same league.
"We were pretty confident" heading into the game, said senior catcher, Jacob Leon after the wins. But after several years without a win there was some trepidation. "We just stepped our game up."
The Bulldogs saved pitcher Cesar Gonzales for game two. The freshman threw three Ks in five innings. Paonia took an early 5-1 lead, with the Bulldogs scoring four runs in the third to tie the game. Each team added another run to tie the game at 6-6 going into the sixth inning.
Hotchkiss pulled Gonzales in the fifth, and with one out, Paonia rallied for six runs to take a convincing lead and win the game, 12-6.
"We could have gotten ourselves down," said Leon, "but instead we brought ourselves up and won it."
Taylor Katzer threw 11 strikeouts and allowed two hits in seven innings of the opening game. Tyler Kendall and Keaton Kropp were both 3-for-5 with one double and one RBI. Katzer was 2-for-6 with two RBIs.
In game two, Jorge Quinonez pitched four Ks and walked four in six innings. Kropp was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He was named Player of the Game for the series.
The games were the league openers for both teams, and the first in Class 2A for the Bulldogs.
Hotchkiss will host Meeker this Saturday in a conference doubleheader, and Paonia will host a conference doubleheader against Rangely.blog comments powered by Disqus
