Despite having two top athletes out for spring break, the Paonia girls' track team scored 141 points to place second at Saturday's Glenwood Springs Demon Invitational. Glenwood Springs won the meet with 142 points.
Paonia won four of five relays, including the 1600-meter relay, which they won in 4 minutes, 11.71 seconds — a full 9 seconds ahead of second place Glenwood Springs.
In the only relay they didn't win, Paonia placed second in the 800-meter sprint medley relay.
Paonia scored 18 points in the 400m, with Ashley Van Vleet placing second (1:01.01), Lindsay Russell third (1:02.31), and Taylor Plymale fourth (1:05.97). Marisa Edmondson placed fourth in the 100m, and Russell was second in the 200m, posting a season-best time of 27.26. Van Vleet also cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump.
Dawn Jenson won the 3200m run in 12:47.24, and placed fourth in the 1600m with a time of 6:00.62.
In the 300m hurdles, Morgan Hartigan ran a season-best 50.68 to place second; Taylor Polson finished fourth in 51.38.
Brooklynd Erickson placed third in the long jump, and in the triple jump, Easton Hartigan cleared 31-03 to place second in the triple jump.
In throwing, Morgan Hartigan placed fourth; freshman Taylor Carsten had her best throw of the season, hitting 35-6.75 to place fifth. Carsten's throw put her in fifth place in state 2A rankings in the event. Hartigan is ranked second.
Carsten also set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 107-7 to finish third. She is now ranked seventh in state.
In men's competition, Paonia scored 73 points to place third out of 15 teams.
The 3200m team of Jacob Helleckson, Jesse Reed, Josiah Spano and Jason Sturgis topped the team performances, finishing first with a time of 8:47.30. Their time puts them at third in state 2A rankings. The 1600m team finished second with a time of 3:50.31.
In the 800, Jeramiah Hillman placed fourth with a time of 2:13.63, and Reed finished fifth in 2:13.89. Helleckson finished eighth with a time of 2:15.61.
In the 1600m, Sturgis finished second (4:55.67), Helleckson placed fifth and Hillman finished sixth. Sturgis also finished second in the 3200m with a time of 10:45.95.
The Glenwood meet was one of 20 held across the state this weekend. Paonia will compete in three more meets before the Western Slope League meets begin on May 10, at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. They compete this Saturday at the Gunnison Invitational.blog comments powered by Disqus
