The Paonia Eagles will host Basalt in a zero-week showdown, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Paonia Town Park. Last year, the Eagles lost 13-6 in overtime in a zero-week game at Basalt.
The Eagles are playing under new head coach Brent McRae, who was the junior high head football coach in 2012. Among his other coaching experiences, McRae spent three years as head girls' basketball coach and five years as assistant football coach at Custer County. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the Eagles in 2012.
McRae's coaching staff includes Scott Rienks (wide receivers, defensive backs and special teams), Don Holt (O-line/D-line), and McRae's father, defensive coordinator, Eric McRae, who spent more than 40 years coaching prep football on the Front Range.
About 20 zero-week games will be played across the state this Friday.
The Eagles will have a week off before hosting Grand Valley on Sept. 6.
The Hotchkiss Bulldogs open the season at home against Olathe on Friday, Aug. 30.
