Paonia Eagles point guard Josiah Spano scored 18 points Friday against Grand Valley, and Taylor Walters added 14, but their efforts weren't enough to match their opponent. Four Grand Valley Cardinal basketball players scored 10 points or more to defeat Paonia, 63-52.
The Eagles held a one-point halftime lead, but were down by five to end the third period. Grand Valley outscored Paonia in the fourth, 19-13, for the win.
Jason Sturgis added eight points to the effort. Defensively, Sturgis had three steals, and Walters pulled down 10 rebounds for Paonia. Eric Carney and Spano each ended the game with seven rebounds.
Paonia was 8 of 9 from the free-throw line, while the Cards took advantage of Paonia's 13 fouls to sink seven of nine shots.
The loss puts the Eagles at 2-2 going into this week's 20th annual Delta County Invitational. Paonia hasn't won the tournament since 2009. It will open against Cedaredge (3-0) at 5 p.m. Friday. Last year the Bruins defeated Paonia, 56-43, in the consolation game.blog comments powered by Disqus
