The Paonia Eagles ladies basketball team opened conference play at 2-0 after a 48-33 home win Friday over Soroco and a 64-25 win Saturday at Hayden.
Paonia 48, Soroco 33
In Friday night's conference opener against Soroco, Lady Ram junior Jessica Rossi scored all of Soroco's points to lead, 9-4, at the end of the first period of play.
The Lady Eagles had lots of looks but scored only 11 points in the second period. Posts Ashley Van Vleet and Taylor Polson got into foul trouble, allowing Soroco to shoot seven of 12 points from the free-throw line. Lady Ram Briana Peterson hit two free throws with 2:24 left in the first half to put Soroco ahead by seven. Paonia senior point guard Carson Pipher hit a jump shot in the final seconds, and Taylor Plymale shot the final 2-pointer from the key to leave Paonia trailing at the half, 18-15.
Plymale scored on an assist from Pipher to open the second half, and Pipher put Paonia ahead on a jump shot from the top of the key. Braiden Clement, who scored 11 points for Paonia, sank a 3-pointer to put Paonia ahead by five, and the Lady Rams were never able to reel them back in.
Clement and Pipher each scored a 3-pointer to end the third period with five points each and give Paonia a 33-22 lead going into the final period.
Paonia forced 13 turnovers on steals for the game, led by Pipher with four. Claire Tracy had 10 of Paonia's 33 rebounds in the win; Van Vleet pulled down five offensive and two defensive rebounds.
Paonia's defense held Soroco to two 2-point field goals in the final period. Rossi hit five of eight shots from the free-throw line in the fourth to end the game with a team-high 14 points.
Paonia 64, Hayden 25
On Saturday, Pipher made 77 percent of her shots to score a season-high 27 points in Paonia's 64-25 win at Hayden. Pipher was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Junior guard Brooklynd Erickson scored four points and had five of Paonia's 21 steals.
The Lady Eagles faced Hotchkiss (6-4, 2-0) on Tuesday (Jan. 21) in the first of two scheduled games this season. (See the Jan. 29 edition of the DCI for details.) Paonia will host West Grand (6-5, 1-1) Friday at 2:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Paonia faces North Park at 4 p.m. Due to Saturday's Screaming Eagles Wrestling Tournament at Paonia High School, all of the North Park games will be played at Delta High School.
Paonia 56, Soroco 47
Josiah Spano scored a game-high 21 points to boost Paonia to a 56-47 conference win at home Friday over Soroco.
The Eagles chose senior post Eric Carney to guard Soroco senior power forward Ryan Jeep, a 6-foot, 5-inch power forward who leads the Rams in scoring, averaging almost 20 points and six rebounds per game this season.
Carney and the Paonia defense held Jeep to 13 points and held the starters to single-digit scores.
Carney also scored four points in the win, and Taylor Walters added seven.
Ben Linnell, Jason Sturgis and Spano were a force from the three-point line, where they scored 24 points. Linnell, who scored nine of his 11 points for the game on three-pointers, opened scoring for Paonia on a trey.
Sturgis shot two treys in the fourth period to end the game with 11 points. And Spano, who scored a game-high 21 points, sank two treys to boost the Eagles to a 27-23 first-half lead.
Paonia 50 Hayden 34
On Saturday, the Eagles upped their conference record to 2-0 with a 50-34 win over Hayden (1-8, 0-2).
The Eagles host West Grand (8-3, 0-2) at 4 p.m. Friday, and on Saturday they face North Park (2-6, 1-3, 1A WSL) at 5:30 p.m. Due to the Screaming Eagles wrestling tournament on Saturday, all games against North Park will be held at Delta High School.blog comments powered by Disqus
