The Paonia Eagles scored six pins and won by forfeit at four weights to win the annual wrestling dual against rival Hotchkiss, 63-17.
Hotchkiss opened with a 6-point lead, with freshman 145-pounder Wade Katzdorn pinning first-year varsity sophomore Nick Brewer.
Paonia won in all the upper weights. At 160, Zach Milner, one of seven Eagles ranked No. 1 in state 2A competition, pinned Bulldog freshman Parker Katzdorn in 1:15. Joel Simianer found himself in trouble against Bulldog 220 Tristan Todd with just under a minute remaining in the first round. Simianer was able to score a reversal and pin Todd with 48 seconds remaining in the round.
No. 1-ranked heavyweight Tony Darling pinned freshman Connor Collins in 58 seconds.
The Eagles' Ty Coats (152), Will Austin (170), Logan Schopp (182) and Trevor Smith (195) won by forfeit.
At 106 pounds, Jake Hubbell scored five for the Bulldogs on a 16-0 win over Colton Godwin, a 106-pound ranked freshman for Paonia. At 113 pounds, Bulldog Garrett Toothaker scored the final win for Hotchkiss, pinning Gabe Ferguson in 1:04.
No. 1-ranked juniors Josh Altman and Jesse Reed scored first-round pins to lift the Bulldogs to a 51-17 lead. First-year varsity senior Isaac Ferguson pinned Valente Campos in the first round to win at 132 pounds.
Sophomore Bo Pipher wrapped up the dual with a first-round pin over Donnovan Sinka (1:26).blog comments powered by Disqus
