In a long-standing rivalry, the Paonia Eagles basketball teams played to wins over Hotchkiss on Jan. 21.
The boys team outscored Hotchkiss, 7-2, in overtime for a 60-55 non-conference win.
"There was a little bit of redemption there," said Paonia head coach Chase Roeber, referring to Paonia's 2-point loss to Hotchkiss in December. "I felt like we owed them one." Roeber was assistant coach at Hotchkiss before moving to Paonia.
"We had a lot of opportunities to win that game," said Bulldogs coach Kyle Crowder. "We missed 13 free throws."
One opportunity came when most of Paonia's starters were benched with foul troubles for much of the third period. After trailing 25-20 at the half, Hotchkiss was able to make a 10-point shift in the game to lead 43-38 heading into the final period.
"They played extremely well," said Roeber of Frani Lopez, Dagan Rienks and Trevor Plymale. "They took care of the ball."
With 2:40 remaining in regulation play, Hotchkiss was shooting bonus points and held a 51-47 lead. The game ended in a 53-53 tie.
With all his players still in the game, Roeber said he didn't change anything heading into overtime. Paonia won the tip and put four points on the board in the first 20 seconds of play. Cesar Gonzalez came in to score two from the paint. Taylor Walters, Josiah Spano and Ben Linnell scored free throws to win the game.
"We came out flat," said Crowder, whose team went for the turnaround jump shots over the post moves. "We had a couple of good looks ... They didn't make mistakes when it counted and we made too many. That was the difference."
Spano scored a game-high 19 points for Paonia. Walters and Linnell added 13 points.
River Panish scored a team-high 15 points for the Bulldogs, and post Chris Allen, sporting a dozen stitches over his blackened right eye from a tumble against Hayden three days earlier, ended the game with 14 points. Sophomore Clayton Oxford added 10 points.
Carson Pipher, Easton Hartigan and Morgan Hartigan all had double-digit scoring in the Lady Eagles' 59-32 win at Hotchkiss. Ashley Van Vleet and Easton Hartigan combined for 17 of Paonia's 47 total rebounds. Point guard Brooklynd Erickson fouled out for Paonia after making four steals and two rebounds and scoring five points.
Point guard Natalie Anderson led Hotchkiss in scoring with 13 points.
The rival teams have a date to meet again on Feb. 18 in the final game of the regular season before district competition opens.blog comments powered by Disqus
