Paonia sends two to tennis

Kropp lost the match and fought back to earn a sixth place finish for the Lady Eagles.Due to this week's spring break, Paonia took only two players to the annual Delta County Invitational tennis tournament.

Annavah Kropp received a first-round bye Friday, then fell in her opening match to Roaring Fork's Shaeley Lough, 8-6. Kropp was up love-forty in the final game, but Shaeley used her powerful and well-placed serves for the win.

Paonia girls claim team title at Woodburn meet

The Paonia girls' track team won four events and placed second in another three to win the Frank Woodburn Invitational Saturday with 109 points. Fruita Monument placed second with 92 points.

Linnell claims TJ gold in his first meet of season

c06 linnellPhoto by Wayne Crick In just his first track meet of the season, Ben Linnell won an individual title in the triple jump and placed fifth in the high jump. Linnell took time off after basketball season and is just now reaching performance levels that allow a high degree of success. Linnell won the triple jump with a jump of 40-6.25. His effort in the high jump measured 5-10. Both accomplishments were personal bests for him. After taking time off from a stellar basketball season, Ben Linnell returned to the Paonia track team in time to win the triple jump at Saturday's Cedaredge Invitational. The junior jumper cleared 40-6.25 to set a new personal record and win the event by a mere quarter of an inch over Chris Black of Delta.

Walk-off grand slam gives Paonia a win

Paonia claimed both wins in five innings to remain undefeated in 2A WSL play. Simianer hit a walk-off grand slam in game two for the 4-14 win.A walk-off grand slam home run by Joel Simianer gave Paonia the second win of the day over Rangely Saturday, and left the Eagles undefeated in 2A Western Slope League competition.

Paonia was up 4-10 in the bottom of the fifth when Simianer hit his second home run of the season to score four runs and give Paonia a 4-14 win over the Panthers.

Paonia girls 2nd at CHS

c06 phstr1Photo by Wayne Crick Hotchkiss and Paonia runners claimed three of the top four spots in last Saturday’s 400m dash at the Cedaredge Invitational. Jennifer Celis, far right, added 10 points to Hotchkiss’ score with the win and a new meet record of 57.8. Sierra Williams had the old record of 59.21 which was set in 2011. Second from the left is Paonia’s Lindsay Russell (fourth in the event) and two lanes left is Ashley Van Vleet who, as a freshman, finished in third place.Morgan Hartigan may have already secured a trip to the 2013 state track meet in the shot put. Hartigan, a sophomore who placed fifth in the event in 2012, heaved the shot 37 feet, 3 inches at Saturday's Cedaredge Invitational, breaking the meet record by 11 inches and topping her personal record by more than a foot.
