Paonia 4x8 tops boys 2A state performance

The Paonia boys 3200-meter relay team wasn't disappointed that they took the silver at the 2A state track meet.

They were ranked first after running their best race of the year to beat top-ranked Telluride the week before, but they also knew that one of Telluride's top runners hadn't raced that day.

Eagles can’t get past Resurrection Christian in 2A baseball semifinals

After advancing to the regional finals in 2A state baseball on a hard-fought win over Sargent, then upsetting No. 2 Las Animas to win the regional tournament, the seventh-seed Eagles ended their run for the state title last Friday with a 6-0 loss to No. 3 Resurrection Christian (Loveland).

The two teams had met exactly two years earlier, and that game had a similar outcome.

Paonia nine roll in 2A

The Paonia Eagles baseball team defeated Sargent’s Farmers and the Las Animas Trojans at the Region 4 baseball tournament last Saturday in Pueblo. The Eagles (15-5-1) now head to the final four segment of the 2A tournament. They face No. 3 Resurrection Christian Cougars (18-3) Friday at Englewood High School in Denver.
The last time Paonia made the final four in baseball, this year's seven seniors were sophomores. They were blanked in the semifinals by a bigger, more experienced Resurrection Christian Cougar's team.

Eagles track teams win titles

Paonia’s Will Austin trailed Dolores’ Moki Youngquist for a brief time during the 2A finals of the 300m hurdles. Austin, who was on the state-qualifying bubble prior to last week’s meet, came back to win the event with the state’s 10th fastest tim
Will Austin was a little surprised last Friday to be starting the finals of the 300-meter hurdles in lane four.

That's the coveted lane reserved for the racer with the fastest qualifying time, and Austin looked confident.

Paonia finishes strong at Cedaredge, looking for wins at league meet

Paonia shot put thrower Tony Darling is favored to win the 2A league title this week in Grand Junction.
The Lady Eagles earned 123 points to place second at Friday's Bruin Invitational, just one point behind Delta. Paonia won the gold in four events and surpassed six meet records.

Lindsay Russell was one of two runners to break the meet record in the 200-meter dash, posting her best time of the season to win in 27.12 seconds.
