Paonia boys short on numbers, big on talent

The varsity squad will be small in number but big on talent.Only half of last year's varsity players for Paonia are returning to the court this season. With a total of 16 players out for the team, head coach Chase Roeber is taking the glass-is-half-full attitude.

Experience, confidence could give Lady Eagles another state title shot

c04 phsgbbPhoto by Tamie Meck Paonia guard Chelsy Reed, who averaged nine points per game her junior season, is one of five returning seniors for the Lady Eagles. This year’s seniors were freshmen when Paonia claimed the state 2A title. Paonia placed fourth last season. With a tougher schedule this season and confidence at an all-time high, Paonia has a shot at reclaiming the state title.As soon as the Lady Eagles were eliminated from last year's 2A state tournament after placing fourth, head coach Scott Rienks knew they needed to play a tougher schedule this season. Paonia was 22-1 going into the tournament, and most of its wins were by 30 or more points.

XC places corrected

Due to a reporting error, the places for Natalie Anderson and Jennifer Celis at the state 2A cross country meet on Oct. 27 were incorrect. Anderson placed third with a time of 20:18.6, and Celis was fourth with a time of 21:00.6.

Despite elimination, Eagles’ state net experience positive

Paonia head coach Krista Carsten will be an assistant coach in the game.Last week's trip to the state volleyball tournament wasn't the first for Paonia head coach Krista Carsten. In 2005 she went as an assistant coach at Hotchkiss and took her young daughter, Ce'rra, with her.

Paonia off to state after wins in regional VB

The Paonia Lady Eagles volleyball team claimed the Region 3 championship and are the first Paonia volleyball team to qualify for state since 1990. The state tournament begins Friday at the Denver Coliseum.For the first time in 22 years, Paonia will be represented at the state volleyball tournament after the Lady Eagles upset Vail Mountain and defeated Dolores to win the 2A Region 3 tournament at Vail on Saturday.

Paonia was coming off three losses a week earlier at the district tournament, including a 3-1 pummeling by Vail Mountain.
