Josie Hiatt, of Hotchkiss and the daughter of Ty and Dana Hiatt, recently won first place honors at the state Rockies Skills Challenge in Grand Junction.

Hiatt scored a perfect 15 out of 15 in the competition and advanced to regional competition at the Coca-Cola All Star Park in Lakewood on Aug. 18.

After all scores were compared in the Lakewood competition, Hiatt was awarded second place.

The regional competition featured over 2000 athletes from various locations across the state of Colorado.

The Rockies Skills Challenge Program allows youngsters to showcase their talents in baserunning, batting, and throwing with scores based on speed, distance, and accuracy.

Hiatt has placed second the past two years at regional competition and was a guest at the Rockies and Miami game later in the day of her challenge competition.

Hiatt has been playing baseball for six years and has played and pitched on the local Hotchkiss boys' 70-foot team which was undefeated this past season and was a member of the North Fork U12 all star team that won the 2011 Colorado state championship.

The Rockies Baseball Skills Challenge is a youth program of the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association with support of the Colorado Rockies baseball team.
