With more than 135 pre-registered entries, and even more registering on the day of the race, the first AppleFest 5K Run and 2.5K Fitness Walk turned out to be a huge success.
Giddyup Kitty, which garnered awards at the 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Festival, was just one of the top notch musical performers to entertain for free during AppleFest.
A new event for AppleFest this year, it was sponsored by the Cedaredge Boy Scout Troop 482. Runners lined up for the 7:30 a.m. start as the sun rose on a cold but clear Saturday morning in Cedaredge. The cool temperatures made for great running conditions, although the spectators would have liked a little more warmth. The course took the racers on rural roads, past several of Cedaredge's famous apple orchards. Some of the Boy Scouts had run the course prior to the race, and provided welcome support for the runners on the morning of the race. A new Eagle Scout, Roger B. Lowry, Jr. led the runners on his bicycle. The Cedaredge Police Department, the Delta County Sheriff's Department and ambulance were on hand for safety's sake and the runners and walkers finished in time to enjoy the traditional Veteran's pancake breakfast. Top Finishers Men's Division Overall - Heath Hibbard, Montrose, with a time of 19 minutes, 31 seconds; 12 and under - JD Miller, Eckert (32:46); 13-19 - Dustin Ownbey, Delta (22:37); 20-39 - Matt Brezonick, Hotchkiss (34:54); 39 and up - Kevin O'Brien, Paonia (20:09). Women's Division Overall - Christie Aschwan-den, Cedaredge (20:47); 12 and under - MacKennea Broyles, Delta (25:31); 13-19 - Hannah Watts, Cedaredge (35:12); 20-39 - Haley Carlton, Cedaredge (25:17); 39 and older - LaDonna Gunn, Cedaredge (26:47). Sponsors of the race included the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce, Hellman Motor Company, Starr's Guitars, Deer Creek Village, Intuitive Design, Surface Creek Bank, Total Family Wellness, Wal-Mart, Sunset Printworks, McDonalds, Lewis and Company, and Wild Cat Drilling. Local businesses donating food and prizes included Cedaredge Food Town; Thomas Bagels; Red Mountain Ranches; Running Tracks in Grand Junction; RJ's Steakhouse; Red's Tapas & Bar; Tri-R Motel; Howard Johnson's; Pizza to the Limit; Dominos; Pizza Hut; Apple Orchard Restaurant; Drost's Chocolates; Cedars Edge Gallery' and Leisure Time Sports. The Cedaredge Boy Scout Troop 482 is sponsored by the Cedaredge Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1535 SW 9th Street, in Cedaredge. Assistant scoutmaster Brad Lindsay said they a looking forward to even more runners next year.
