Kyle O’brien (24), at the bottom of the pile, has the initial contact with a West Grand runner during game action last week in Hotchkiss. Several of his Bulldogs’ teammates zero in on the action. Hotchkiss was more than ready for the game as the Bulldogs pounded out a 47-13 win.
A scoreless first quarter was a testimony to the determination of the host Tigers. The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the second stanza when Pat Sullivan hauled in a Ryan Spor pass that covered 85 yards and a touchdown. A two-point conversion gave Hotchkiss an 8-0 lead that would prove to be all the scoring in the first half of play. Things did change in the second half with Hotchkiss taking control of the contest with three scores in the third quarter. Spor, the Bulldogs quarterback, tacked on six more points when he scooted into the endzone from nine yards out for Hotchkiss’ first score of the second half. Sullivan’s extra-point boot made the score 15-0. Not long after that, Spor made it two in a row with his second touchdown of the period from 26 yards out. Sullivan’s kick was good once again to push the Bulldogs’ lead to 22-0. It was Sullivan’s turn again to score as the third quarter was winding down. A 70-yard interception return for the score putting Hotchkiss up 29-0 after the PAT kick by Sullivan was good. A Tyler Hanson three-yard run gave the Bulldogs their final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Sullivan’s extra-point try failed to leave the score at 35-0. Defensively for the Bulldogs, Dakota Coats spearheaded the attack with 13 tackles and one sack. Kyle O’Brien had 10 tackles with freshman Jacobe Galley recording nine tackles. Three other Bulldogs had seven tackles including Kyle Douglass, Spor and Steven Floyd. Douglass was also credited with two sacks. Sullivan finished with six tackles and the interception that he returned for the 70-yard touchdown. Leading the offensive stats was Spor with seven carries that were good for 96 yards. Tyler Hanson was next in line with 77 yards on 14 carries. Galley got into the game for three carries and he scooted for 49 yards. Jaime Rodriguez had 12 carries in the game that gave him a total of 47 yards. The Bulldogs are at home on Saturday, Oct. 24, where they take on Grand Junction’s junior varsity team. The kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
