A funeral service was held Oct. 30 at Bible Center Church in Paonia, with Pastor Paul Millermon officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Mattern was born Jan. 15, 1917, in Burwell, Neb., to Harry and Bonnie Ballard. She spent her childhood in Burwell, Neb.
She married Vernon Mattern on July 27, 1938, in Ord, Neb. They lived in Burwell, Neb., before moving to Olathe in 1954. They moved to Paonia in 1955. Her husband died July 6, 1994.
Mrs. Mattern was a homemaker. She was a member of the Bible Center Church in Paonia and the Bone Mesa Helping Hand Club.
She is survived by her son, Mel Mattern; three daughters, Barbara McHugh, Wilma Butler and Marty Littlejohn; a brother, Larry Ballard; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Simpson.
