Mr. Vannest was born March 14, 1941, in Model, to Eldon and Dorothy Vannest. He spent his childhood in the San Luis Valley and LaSalle. He graduated from LaSalle High School where he was an athlete. He was all-state football, basketball and baseball. He attended Adams State and was a freshman starter on the football team until he broke his leg.
He was a heavy equipment operator in road construction for San Miguel County, City of Delta and Delta County before retiring in 2004. He also worked for the Town of Telluride, Colorado Division of Wildlife, UPS and several ranches and farms. He had his own business outfitting for deer and elk hunting for 10 years. Hunting, fishing and the outdoors were his passions.
Mr. Vannest is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Vannest of Delta; a son, Mark Vannest of Delta; a daughter, Dena Vannest; his mother, Dorothy Vannest; four brothers and their wives, Leon and Betty Vannest of Delta, Frank and Karen Vannest, and Lyle and Judi Vannest, all of LaSalle, and Gerald and Debby Vannest of Greeley; a sister and her husband, Nadine and Dave Reid of Oak Creek; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, a brother, his father, two nephews and one niece.
A memorial fund in the name of Elmer Vannest has been established at Bank of the West, 402 Main Street, Delta, CO 81416.
