A man threatening to end his life with a 12-gauge shotgun closed down a neighborhood in North Delta for several hours Monday night. A reverse 911 call went out to 500+ residents advising them to lock their doors and remain inside.

Residents in the area of 1600 and H38 roads trying to get home were turned away by traffic control officers, because the man had reportedly left his residence and was outside with the shotgun.

DPD spokesman Jamie Head said the man’s wife called 911 at about 7:30 p.m. to report the incident. After she was advised to lock her doors, the man reportedly wandered around the house trying to gain access and to speak to his wife through the windows of the house.

The man, who had reportedly been drinking, was taken into custody after several hours had passed. He was placed on a mental health hold and later released. The shotgun was never located, Head said.

One North Delta resident reported that she wasn’t allowed to go home until around 10:30 p.m.
