Hotchkiss’ Tyler Hanson sprints towards the goal in the picture above. Hanson took the ball on the first play of Hotchkiss’ first possession and scooted 61 yards for a touchdown against Dolores last Saturday. Hanson scored twice in the game as Hotchkiss scored a 49-0 win over the Bears in 1A post-season playoff action.
Jaime Rodriguez scored three times and Tyler Hanson twice as the Hotchkiss Bulldogs rolled to an impressive 49-0 victory over the 12th seed Dolores Bears on Saturday. The Bulldogs, the number five seeded team, got off to a terrific start and stayed in front the whole way to advance to the second round of 1A state playoffs for the second straight year.

The Bulldogs held Dolores on its first offensive series and wasted little time taking charge when they took possession for their first series. Tyler Hanson took the Ryan Spor handoff and exploded off the right side of the Bulldogs’ offensive line for 61 yards and the game’s first score. Hanson’s touchdown came with 9:39 left to play in the opening period. Patrick Sullivan made the first of six PAT kicks to make the score 7-0.

Neither team was able to solve the other’s defense the rest of the way in first quarter play and the score remained 7-0 heading into the second period.

Following their 49-0 rout of Dolores’ Bears, the Hotchkiss Bulldogs posed for this team picture. The Bulldogs will travel to take on Limon’s Badgers on Nov. 14. Members of the team, not in order, include Pat Sullivan, Tyler Hanson, Jaime Rodriguez, Brandon Burns, Ryan Spor, Dustin Head, Dakota Coats, Jesse Head, Garrett Tiedeman, Braeden Horton, Mitch Mc Callister, Marco Meza, Gage Grimmett, Erik Steckel, Taylor Schreiner, Dylan Hill, Jacob Edwards, Kurt Katzdorn, Trenton Tamayo, Brayden Wilson, Wyatt Penland, Joe Boyle, Nolan Tracy, Ronny Hicks, Brice Simpson, Jake Richards, Antonio Padilla, Kyle Douglass, Brady Dutton, Conner Beard, T. Hicks, Dais Spedon, Zack Taylor, Reed Hubble, David Mendoza, Tanner Simpson, Steven Floyd and Tell Hawk. The Bulldogs are coached by Zac Lemon, Curtis Hintz, Jason Yantzer and Glenn Suppes.
Hotchkiss’ offense was able to control the ball with the run once again and Hanson scored his second touchdown of the game from one yard out. This score came with 10:22 left on the clock in the second stanza. Sullivan made the score 14-0.

The Bulldogs’ defense was stifling, for the most part, in the second period. Its offense was productive in the last portion of the quarter with Rodriguez punching in his first touchdown with 3:33 left in the first half. Rodriguez’s score came from two yards out with Sullivan booting the extra point for a 21-0 Hotchkiss lead.

The Bulldogs added their fourth touchdown of the half when Spor tossed a nine-yard pass to Steven Floyd with :59 left in the second quarter. The Sullivan kick for the point after gave Hotchkiss a 28-0 halftime lead.

Dolores’ starting quarterback, and key player, Austin Knuppel, was injured near the end of the first half to further dampen the spirits of the Bears football team. Knuppel was taken from the field in an ambulance and transported to Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Hotchkiss began the second half with the football and at 11:10, the Bulldogs upped their score to 34-0 with Rodriguez’s second touchdown on a 24-yard scamper. Sullivan’s kick was good for a 35-0 lead.

A little over two minutes later, Hotchkiss’ defense scored a touchdown when Sullivan picked off an Alex Goodwin pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown. Sullivan’s sixth PAT gave the Bulldogs a 42-0 lead with 9:17 left in the third period. The defensive score marked the fifth straight game Hotchkiss’ defense had produced a score.

As the third quarter wound down, a 16-yard run by Rodriguez made the score 48-0. Jacobe Galley booted the extra point making the final score 49-0.

Once the Bulldogs had achieved a 40-point advantage, the game clock was allowed to run unless there was a timeout, an injury, or the change to another quarter of play.

The fourth quarter went by uneventfully and Hotchkiss preserved the victory and earned a ticket to the next round of play.

The Bulldogs will be making the trip to Limon (fourth seed) where they will face a state-tested Badger’s football team. Limon, a 49-16 winner over Wiggins, comes into this weekend’s game with a 9-1 record while the Bulldogs are 10-0.

Hanson’s 11 carries for 160 yards paced the Bulldogs’ ground game. Rodriguez was good for 94 yards on 12 carries. The Bulldogs piled up 331 yards on the ground and Spor contributed another 54 yards through the air on five completions out of nine attempts.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led in tackles by Kyle O’Brien who had six in the game. Sullivan was close behind with his five solos and one assist. After that, Galley had four solos and one assist, Jake Richards four solos, and Kyle Douglass and Tanner Simpson with three solos and one assist each.
