Preschoolers at the Hotchkiss Montessori Community School will soon be able to swing, slide and play on a new playground, built just for them, thanks to a few grants and lots of work by parents.
Kids at the Montessori Community School in Hotchkiss have a fun playground to explore, thanks to help from families of the students who helped install the equipment over several weekends this fall.
The last task before the playground is usable is to put wood chips down, which should happen this week. The school applied for and won several grants and held fund raisers to come up with the total of $8,780 to help build the playground. “We’re very thankful we got the grants,” said Bill Eyler, director of the school. Gabriella Pevec, who was on the committee that built the playground at Paonia Town Park., and whose daughter attends the preschool, offered her assistance in designing the playground. “I was happy to help,” she said. The equipment she picked is between 50-100 percent recycled materials. Though the playground is nearly complete, there is a Phase II, during which more equipment will be installed over the next year.
