Cedaredge Rotary Club president Steve Wilson (left) presented a check for $250 to Surface Creek Community Services president Jean Weisbeck and board member Ellet Paul Cramer during a meeting of the club on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
According to SCCS president Jean Weisbeck, the Rotary’s donation will be used by the food bank to help purchase the food needed for 200 traditional Christmas dinners which will be given out during the holiday season.

“Each of those dinners will feed a family of four,” explained SCCS board member Ellet Paul Cramer.

The Surface Creek Community Services, Inc. (SCCS), began in 2002 as a food pantry, providing food on a monthly basis for those in need. In 2003, SCCS  served 18 families per month.

Over the years, the number of people coming in to the food bank seeking assistance has continued to increase, rising to 190 families in October, up from an average of 130 families per month.

SCCS volunteers work to provide food to people in need, on a temporary basis, and to provide referrals to organizations for assistance for other basic needs such as utilities, rent, clothing and medicine. They also work with the Surface Creek Valley Lions Club to provide coats, jackets and outerwear for anyone needing a warm coat or jacket.

A member of SHARE Colorado, the SCCS is located in the old Cedaredge ambulance bays, behind the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce building at 245 W. Main in Cedaredge. The hours of operation are; Mondays, from  9-11 a.m.  and Thursdays, from 1-3 p.m.

Local clubs meet weekly to discuss local and global issues.

The Cedaredge Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at  RJ’s Steakhouse at noon. This week’s guest speaker was Bruce Bertram who talked to club members about the many factors of waste management and storage of toxic materials. The club serves residents of Cedaredge and the Surface Creek Valley. There are also Rotary clubs in Delta and Paonia.
