McConnell will be facing State Sen. Scott Tipton of Cortez vying for the party’s nomination. The seat is currently held by Democrat John Salazar of Alamosa.

While meeting with potential supporters at the Dog House coffee shop on Main Street, McConnell emphasized his military background and his conservative stand on issues.

“Lead, follow, or get out of the way,” he said expressing his political outlook in a phrase adapted from his days as an Army Ranger.

He opposes federal “stimulus funding.” He said, “Stimulus spending creates a downward cycle of dependency. Government needs to get out of the way of the American people who know how to create jobs.”
