Delta County Girl Scouts, troop leaders, troop volunteers and their families came together at the Delta Middle School’s cafeteria on Friday, Jan. 8, to kick off this year’s cookie sale activity. More than 60 Girl Scouts and nearly 100 adults attended the rally.

The theme was a pizza and pajama party with activities that included games, troop cookie skits, coolest Girl Scout pajama contests, and of course sampling this year’s eight cookie varieties. Girl Scouts also earned a 2010 Cookie Rally Patch for attending.

Food and fun weren’t the only activities during the party. Girl Scouts and their troops were encouraged to participate in statewide service project called “Cans for Colorado.” Delta County Girl Scouts turned this project into a contest to see which troop could collect and bring the most non-perishable food to the rally. The troop who collected the most food by weight earned a $10 gift card. More than 520 pounds of food was collected, with the winning troop bringing in 336 pounds. Daisy and Brownie Troop 2309, a new Hotchkiss troop, went on a walk-a-bout and collected food from their local neighborhood during one of their meetings beforehand. Troops in each of the three areas, Surface Creek, North Fork and Delta, will be contacting their local food pantries, non-profit organizations or known families in need to make delivery arrangements.

Delta County Girl Scouts would like to thank the following businesses for their support in helping with the success of our rally: McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Delta Super, Safeway, Patsy’s Secretarial and of course Delta Middle School.
