The Delta County Democratic Party has just two potential candidates running for office in the 2010 elections. Gretchen Nicholoff reported to the Democratic Central Committee at their Jan. 21 meeting in Hotchkiss no Democrat has stepped forward to run for District 1 county commissioner. Home health nurse Lucky Adams announced he is running for county coroner. Adams believes in family rights in unattended deaths, to have the coroner report explained to the deceased’s family and more transparency in costs. He ran unsuccessfully four years ago. Clifton resident Claudette Konola has announced her candidacy for District 54 representative. Konola has 40 years experience in finance, is knowledgeable about the economy and has helped create 40,000 jobs across the nation. She hopes to attract Independents and Republicans. Sally Kane said the party needs ghost writers to prepare letters to newspaper editors. Kane introduced Brad Burritt of Citizens for a Healthy Community, a local group interested in the Bureau of Land Management’s revision of their resource management plan. Burritt asked if the Democrats would like to write letters to the BLM. Eric Jessen responded that the party is very diverse and is struggling to grow as a party. He suggested there is a greater need to build the party than push one issue. Another said the party needs to stand for something. Everyone would vote on any proposal presented at the precincts. If a proposal passes, then it would reflect the opinion of the active party. Finally, a man who has had a long career in working on environmental issues for oil and gas companies, coal mines, the Forest Service and BLM, said before the party aligns itself with another group’s agenda the members will have to know what the issues are and have facts to formulate a decision. Precinct captains for the March 16 caucus are Karen Lacey for Precinct 2, Robert Rice Precinct 9 and Elisa Greco Precinct 14. The county assembly will be held on March 27 at Westminster Hall in Delta. The Democrats participated in five community events last year. It was suggested to drop the AppleFest event to help cut costs. In another cost saving measure, there will only be a Democratic headquarters in a presidential election year. Other years there will be none or in a guest house on private property. The Spring Celebration JJ Dinner will be on April 24 at Memorial Hall. A June 12 pancake breakfast will held at Cleland Park in Delta. The Democrats will move their Victory Celebration dinner to after the November election and before Thanksgiving.
