Mountain bikers may be familiar with Moab's world famous "24 Hours Behind the Rock" bike race. Now they can look forward to a similar test of skills in Delta County, called the "12 Hours Behind the Prison."
This will be a 12-hour team relay mountain bike race on Saturday, Sept. 19, on Sawmill Mesa near the Delta Correctional Facility. It will be a fundraiser to benefit Boy Scout Troop 497 of Cedaredge and Delta County Search and Rescue. The race course will follow old jeep trails on BLM land just west of Delta, and is about 15 miles long with about 1,600 feet of climbing. It is ideal for first time racers and seasoned racers alike. So get your relay team together and start training for the first annual relay ride on Sawmill Mesa. And it will be a great warm up for the "24 Hours of Moab" on Oct. 10-11. Organizers are seeking sponsors to provide cash, services or merchandise for prizes. Donations are tax deductible. For details contact Rick Schaefer at 835-4800 or 640-2425, or e-mail rick@agdevices.com. More information about the race can be found online at www.deltabikerace.com. Registration forms and a course map are available, along with photos.
