Camp Cedaredge and the Colorado Division of Wildlife hosted a River Watch Camp the last week of July.

"Water camp" is primarily designed to train teachers and their students, along with watershed groups, in proper sampling; variety of testing procedures; recording and sample shipment; water issues; mission and goals.

Curtis Hartenstine of Colorado Watershed Assembly emceed the introduction of various state personnel and support staff. Expectations and goals of attendees and instructors were covered. River Watch was well represented by such folks as Chad Woodrow of the Roaring Fork Conservancy, which monitors 29 sites, and DOW volunteers Susan Mills and an associate who test eight sites on the Uncompahgre and 10 on the San Miguel. Trainees came from as far as Estes Valley schools and Kiowa to the east and the Upper Dolores at Rico to the south.

The Clean Water Act of 1972 and how it relates to Colorado's efforts to monitor water quality throughout the state was discussed.

Last year, approximately 8,000 samples were taken and processed at the state lab in Fort Collins for heavy metals and nutrients. In schools and homes tests for alkalinity, hardness and pH from 300 sites were also conducted.

Barb Horn of DOW, known as the Mother of River Watch, reminds everyone that the multitude of quantitative data generated by the various volunteers can be accessed on the Internet.

The sessions wound down Thursday with an address from Peter Butler, vice chair of the Water Quality Control Commission. Butler stated that a great deal of River Watch's data is utilized by himself and the State Health Department to keep tabs on watersheds at risk and those that remain consistent with citizens' expectations of high standards.
