A BEAUTIFULLY DETAILED saddle was the top prize for Hunter Brasfield, who won the junior boys’ world all-around title at the National Little Britches competition in early August.

More than 700 LBRA athletes from across the country competed for 30 world championships. During the first five days of the rodeo, each contestant competed in two rounds for each event in which he or she qualified for the finals. After everyone competed on two head or two runs, the top 15 contestants in each event became eligible to compete in the short round performance, the championship round, on Saturday. Finals champions are determined by points earned strictly at the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo, while world titles are awarded on the basis of regular season points plus points earned at the national finals.

Throughout the year, Brasfield has been accumulating points in seven events - bareback riding, bull riding, goat typing, break away roping, flag racing, ribbon roping and team roping. He partners with his sister Brittanny in the roping events.

Brasfield made the "short go" in five of those events, and walked away with 13 buckles at the finals, plus a saddle for the world all-around title.

Hunter has competed in the Little Britches Rodeo Association for four years. He's been on the road with his family and three horses - Phantom, Dolly and Wapiti - nearly every weekend since spring.

For the Brasfields, rodeo never stops. Hunter is planning to attend a bull riding school in preparation for the move up to the senior boys' division of Little Britches. There's also a winter series of rodeos to keep his rodeo skills sharp.

A freshman at Delta High School, Brasfield is also active in football, wrestling and track. At middle school he regularly earned a spot on the school honor roll.
