Brewmaster Mike King from Paonia's Revolution Brewery brought home the award of best pale ale from the Crested Butte Fall Festival of Beers & Chili Cook-off.
The competition, held Sept. 12, matched King's IPA against 10-12 other brews. Some were from small handcrafted breweries from Gunnison, Crested Butte and Telluride. King's brew also competed against some of the big boys in the brewing world - New Belgium Brewing, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Odell Brewing and others. Revolution Brewery was also the smallest brewery at the festival. "It was kind of a who's who in pale ales," he said. Revolution's winning IPA is called SEIPA, a play on SEI, the solar energy company in Paonia. It's now on tap at the brewery's tasting room. "We're really proud," King said. He and his wife Gretchen also took their brews to a brew fest in Ouray recently. They're now back at home crafting more beers with the hopes of expanding their tasting room hours soon.
