Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, is the anniversary of the ending of World War I. In the United States it is celebrated as a federal holiday on Nov. 11. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday in 1938. On June 1, 1954, President Eisenhower signed into law, legislation officially changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Not to be confused with Memorial Day (the day our nation traditionally takes a moment in time to remember loved ones and pay homage to those military men and women who have given their lives in our nation’s service) Veterans Day is observed annually on Nov. 11, as a holiday honoring all those veterans who have served in the nation’s Armed Forces. A national ceremony also takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Grand Mesa Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 9221 will be honoring all veterans with a Veteran’s Day celebration at the Cedaredge High School, starting at 9:30 a.m. All veterans and their families are invited to attend. On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Cedaredge Cemetery Board invites local veterans and their families to to join with them to celebrate Veteran’s Day, starting at 10 a.m. On this day, members of the Grand Mesa VFW Post 9221, and members from the American Legion, Post 104, will provide the Honor Guard. Taps will be played; flags will be flying; and all those veterans buried there (nearly 300 in all) will be remembered by name during roll call.
