Joe Berger is the new girls’ softball coach at Cedaredge High School.

Berger replaces Randy Brown who moved to the gridiron for other coaching duties in 2008. Assisting Berger will be Angie Morgan and previous girls’ coach Dick Hamilton.

The Lady Bruins will have an uphill task ahead of them with just 20 athletes signed up for softball at Cedaredge High School. This year’s roster includes four seniors, six juniors, four sophomores, and six freshmen.

Cedaredge’s infield may be its strength in 2008. Coach Berger sees seniors Taryn Fischer, Cera Barnes, and Brittany Nicholas as part of a key core for the Lady Bruins.

Fischer plays shortstop, Barnes is stationed at first base, and Nicholas will be a utility player this season.

Megan Caywood is junior and will be relied upon to provide strong play as a pitcher for Cedaredge. Sophomore Amber Farr will anchor the left side of the infield at third base for the Lady Bruins.

Berger sees Gunnison as the team to beat in the WSL this season. According to Berger, “Gunnison is the toughest in our league. They have a great program.”

The coaching staff is optimistic about the coming season. Coach Berger says, “We plan to get better every week.”

Other seniors not already mentioned previously on the Lady Bruins’ roster included Jennifer Elgas.

Juniors joining Caywood on the team roster for Cedaredge include Ashley Brady, Traci Collier, Brooke Gardner, Savanna Loyer, and Tesla Ullery.

Sophomore teammates for Farr include Brook Hernandez, Mindy Pinel, and Gabby Young.

This year’s frosh contingent is made up of Kirsten Berghauser, Samantha Brown, Brianna Henrie, Brittany McCune, Sidney Navarro, and Hope Shaw.

The Lady Bruins played twice this past weekend and came a way with a split. Cedaredge defeated Rifle’s junior varsity 11-4 but lost to Basalt by a score of 7-4.
