altLast weekend, an international group of experimental film makers journeyed to Paonia for several days of film showings, workshops, and technical presentations hosted by The International Experimental Cinema Exposition (TIE).

One of the highlights of the festival was the Cine Parcours, a multi-projector presentation of moving images accompanied by original music and sound effects. TIE’s Cine Parcours was held at Paonia’s Paradise Theater. Musicians Logan Corcoran of Boulder on bongo drums, Andy Tran of Washington, D.C., on the acoustic guitar and Butler Cox of Paonia on keyboard and sound machine, performed. Cox also composed original music and sounds for the event.

Following the Parcours, the musicians plus other TIE members created a sonic jam session to film shown on the screen using the above instruments, plus the sonic inspirations of people in the audience who offered various speech and vocal noises, projector sounds, cup-tapping, singing, and other creative sounds. Any sound was permitted as long as it appropriately fit the musical structure of the moment. While not uncommon elsewhere in the world, this cinematic sonic jam may be the first held in the United States.

TIE attendees enjoyed this and other attractions of the Upper North Fork Valley and are looking forward to another TIE festival in Paonia next year.
