Home health and hospice care are responsible for maintaining the quality of life and dignity for many individuals in Delta County and surrounding areas.
As part of the annual, month-long observance of National Home Care Month, Scott Tipton, newly elected District 58 state house representative from Cortez, came to Delta to learn first hand about the kind of home health care that is available locally.![]() Tipton was accompanied by representatives of two local home health care businesses: Bob Page and Suzanne Hamilton, owners of Adult Home Care Services; and Cindy Hudson, director of Delta Montrose Home Health Services. Along with home caregiver Donna Calhoun and Barb Weeks of Adult Home Care Services, Tipton visited Delta resident Evelyn Sturges at the Heaven’s View apartments. There, he saw first hand how the home care industry works and was able to ask questions about programs and government support of the work. Tipton’s visit included a visit with Sturges, a 70-year-old who lives independently with the assistance of the two home care agencies. She uses oxygen and a medication dispenser. She has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and recently struggled with breast cancer. She is served by the Medicaid Home and Community-based Services waiver program which provides aid to elderly Medicaid recipients who are at risk of nursing home placement and who can be safely and less-expensively assisted in their own homes. Delta Montrose Home Health Services provides medication management for Evelyn. Calista Brumett, RN, is currently assigned to Evelyn and checks on her regularly, monitors her medications, and fills her home medication dispensing machine. Evelyn’s type of home care service has proven to prevent emergency room and hospital visits because patients are more likely to take their medications properly. Adult Home Care Services, Inc., provides homemaking and personal care for Evelyn. Three times weekly they help with bathing, laundry, and homemaking. Providers Donna Calhoun and Kay Thatcher check on Evelyn to make sure she is eating properly. They are able to run errands when needed and keep Evelyn’s home safe and clean. Medical and supportive home care has a long history in our country. It has proven to be the preferred method of long-term health care delivery because it keeps families together, helps to maintain personal freedom, and postpones institutionalization. Home care promotes healing, is safer, reduces stress, and is cost effective. It improves the quality of life and extends life in the preferred setting, the home. Delta Montrose Home Health Services and Adult Home Care Services, Inc., are the oldest agencies in Delta and Montrose counties. They have worked collaboratively for many years to serve the health and home care needs of elderly and disabled citizens in our communities.
