Colorado's labor market slumped significantly at the beginning of the year, according to Donald J. Mares, executive director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. At 6.6 percent, the state's January seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose eight-tenths of a percentage point from the revised December rate of 5.8 percent.
"Despite the increase, Colorado's jobless rate continues to be considerably lower than that of the nation," noted Mares. The current rate is much higher than last year at this time when it stood at 4.3 percent.
Slowing labor market conditions were recorded throughout most Colorado areas during the month as 62 counties saw higher unemployment rates. Delta County reported an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent, compared to 5.5 percent for the previous month (December 2008) and 4.5 percent for January 2008. Yuma County posted the lowest jobless rate at 3.2 percent; the highest rate was registered in Dolores County at 12.3 percent.
