On Thursday, July 16, during the regular meeting of the Cedaredge Town Council, the trustees unanimously approved an amendment to the municipal code to exempt individuals 19 years or younger from the town's business license requirement.

The action was accomplished by adopting Ordinance 2009-07 to  amend Chapter 5.14.080 of the Municipal Code.

Cedaredge town administrator Kathleen Sickles explained that the purpose of Chapter 5 was to establish a registry of businesses doing business within the Town of Cedaredge. Sickles added that the ordinance requiring a business license was never intended for children.

The amended section now has provisions to exempt:

• A license shall not be required of a casual sale or a person or business for delivery in the Town of Cedaredge of property or goods purchased or acquired in good faith from such person at his regular place of business outside the Town of Cedaredge where no intent by such person is shown to exist to evade the provisions of this order."

• Any business, profession or occupation licensed under any other town ordinance and paying a license fee to engage in such business, profession or occupation, other than sales tax license, nor to any business, profession or occupation paying another business license fee to the town.

Sickles added this refers only to those businesses already licensed to do business within the Town of Cedaredge, by way of a separate license issued by the Town of Cedaredge (e.g., a liquor license), and not to those businesses with a license from any town other than Cedaredge.

• Business, profession or occupation operating during a town scheduled special event within the specified location, and recognized as a participant by registration, application or sponsorship.

• Individuals 19 years of age and under.
