It's all over now, except for the shoutin', the goodbye hugs and of course, the braggin' rights.
This year’s All Around winners were Hunter Brasfield of Delta in the Junior Boys division, Chance Kittell of Grand Junction in the Senior Boys, Caelee Criswell of Baggs, Wyo., in the Senior Girls, Deena Norell of Meeker in the Junior Girls and Courtney Freeman of Eckert in the Little Wranglers division.
With that, the longest running Little Britches Rodeo in the United States, the Cedaredge Western Slope Little Britches Rodeo has concluded its 51st annual run on Sunday, July 12. Hosted by the Surface Creek Festival Association (SCFA), the Western Slope Little Britches Rodeo took place this past weekend (July 10-12), with two separate rodeos and performances on Friday evening and Saturday morning, and Saturday evening and Sunday morning. It attracted entries from Colorado, Nevada, Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah. Events included saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, goat tying, pole bending, trail course, break-away calf roping, team roping, individual roping, bull riding, and tie down roping. The competitors were all between the ages of 5 and 18, competing in three age groups: Little Wranglers, ages 5-8; juniors, ages 8 through 13; and seniors, ages 14 through 18. There was also the extremely popular "mutton busting" contest for all kids 7 years old, and under, weighing in at less than 60 pounds. The awards presentation took place on Sunday, July 12. Overall winners (average of scores in both rodeos) in each category were: Chance Kittell of Grand Junction was the senior boys All Around winner, with Eric Fleming of Craig runner up. The All Around Senior Girl was Caelee Criswell of Baggs, Wyoming. Carleigh Olson of Westhaven, Utah, was runner up. In the Junior Boys division, Hunter Brasfield of Delta was the top All Around. Denton Taylor of Craig was runner up. Deena Norell of Meeker took All Around honors in the Junior Girls division, and Nellie Freeman of Eckert was runner up. In the Little Wranglers division, Courtney Freeman of Eckert was the top All Around. Jaidyn Steele of Craig was runner up. The All Around winners of each division received an engraved saddle, while the runner up finishers each received an engraved breast collar. The Walter H. and Garrett Simon Memorial award for sportsmanship went to Robby Weed of Monte Vista in the senior division, Nathan Qualls of Rifle in the junior division, and Courtney Freeman of Eckert in the Little Wrangler division. Contestants earn points to earn the right to compete at the National Little Britches Rodeo, in Pueblo this year.
