Cedaredge High School Homecoming 2016 got off to a high-spirited start on Monday beginning a week of activities designed to build participation and excitement into the big Homecoming weekend.
Student dress-up theme began with an American Monday and patriotic costume the day's fashion statement of choice. The daytime activities which included regular class work and assignments, was followed by a movie night at the school.
On Tuesday, the dress up theme continued with a world travel slant. Students were encouraged to create fashions on the theme of tourism, perhaps touting some of the favorite places they have traveled to when they and their families played tourist for other communities' economic development efforts.
Tuesday night excitement included a round of the popular group game Capture the Flag; only this session was held in a darkened gym with participants carrying glowsticks.
Wednesday was Virtual Day on the dress-up theme calendar and students went to surf the waves of cyberspace and create a costume design for the day that was computer cool. There was a break in the evening activities roster on Wednesday as students obviously needed an evening to get caught up on homework before the week's end.
Olympic athletes and their accomplishments set the stage for Thursday's dress up fun. There will be plenty of inspiration available to draw from as the U.S. has just completed another top medal take tally at the Rio Olympics just concluded.
On Thursday night there is a chili cook-off fundraiser event that will pit various factions of the staff and student body against one another's favorite chili recipe. The public is invited to this event beginning at 6:30 p.m. A mere $5 will get guests a spoon, a bowl, and a vote on their favorite recipe. Chili is being donated by students and school staff, and the community is also welcome to participate.
At dusk around 8 p.m. excitement begins to really build for Homecoming week as the annual bonfire is lit.
On Friday, students are to honor their class color with dress-up attire. The biggest day of Homecoming week will include the annual Homecoming parade that makes its way through downtown Cedaredge beginning at 1 p.m. followed by a pep rally in Town Park
The big game against rival Gunnison kicks off at 7 p.m. with the Homecoming king and queen crowned at halftime.
Homecoming week activities conclude with the social event of the season when the annual Homecoming dance at the school takes place from 8 to 11 p.m.
It is an annual week of high energy and high spirits enough to take the entire community into the fall season with good feelings.
