Dear Editor:

Rocky Mountain Wolf Project is making progress toward reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. Mike Philips, biologist, former US Fish & Wildlife Service employee, presently state senator in Montana and executive director of the Turner Endangered Species Fund, recently held a meeting in Carbondale to win support for reintroducing wolves in Colorado. A front page article in the Daily Sentinel entitled "Wolves at Colorado's door?" was published on Feb. 9. The Carbondale meeting to promote reintroduction was rebutted by Eric Porter, who said in the Fence Post's Feb. 5 edition "a lot of what was said in the meeting is not backed up by facts." Eric's family has been very involved with the wolf reintroduction program in Oregon; he owned a ranch right in the middle of the first wolf pack, the Imnaha pack program.

"The Real Wolf" by Ted B. Lyon and Will N. Graves documents with scientific evidence the savagery and brutality that wolves inflict on livestock and the Defenders of Wildlife's opinion that ranching should become a thing of the past in areas where wolves are prevalent.

In Yellowstone, the elk herd went from 19,000 to 4,900 after introduction of the wolf. The "Real Wolf" book makes you aware of diseases and hazards to human life as well as the economic impact on rural areas with the decimation of wild game. Additionally, the goal of 10 breeding pairs in Montana has changed drastically -- no one knows how many wolves there are now. In Oregon, three environmental groups are suing the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife to force them to put wolves back on the endangered species list!

Get the book "The Real Wolf" and start writing articles and encouraging ranchers, farmers, sportsmen and businesses in rural areas to wake up and cry wolf.
